SOP Software With MCP Servers: Which Tools Let AI Agents Read Your SOPs

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open protocol that lets an AI assistant call tools and read data in another system. An SOP tool with an MCP server exposes some of its functions, such as searching procedures, reading a workflow or creating a task, as tools an agent can use. Read access lets the agent answer with your procedure; write access lets it change your procedures or data, which is where governance comes in.

An agent that can only read approved SOPs is a search tool. An agent that can write can create, edit or delete procedures. Process Street's May 2026 release says its endpoints cover creating, updating, duplicating and deleting workflows, and that agents can operate on a workspace through MCP with the same capabilities a team has in the user interface. That is useful for automation, and it means the agent's account needs the same limits as a person's: the right role, no ability to publish without approval, and every change in the audit trail. Process Street added an Access Explorer view in March 2026 that shows each user's access in one tree, which is the kind of check to run on an agent's account too.

1. Only approved, current versions are exposed. Drafts and retired versions should not be in the agent's answers.
2. The agent's account has a role. Give it reader access unless it has a defined job that needs more.
3. Agent changes are logged like human changes, with the account name and time.
4. Anything the agent writes goes through the same review and approval as a person's edit.
5. The feature is on your plan. On Whale and Trainual, MCP access is not on every plan.
6. The agent cites the SOP and version it used, so a person can check the answer.
